All About Us
We were founded in 1979 by the Park District with the idea that every child is unique and, therefore, special.
Director, Pam Terlap, joined the Park District in 1995. Mrs. Terlap has a B.S. degree in Elementary Education and Special Education for the Visually Impaired from Northern Illinois University.
Teacher, Katie LeClair, joined the Park District in 2008. Prior to that Mrs. LeClair was a PAC (Parental Advisory Committee) member and a substitute teacher.
Our goal is to provide a solid foundation for our student's future education in a nurturing and loving environment. In addition to the ABC's and 123's, our curriculum includes an emphasis on daily living skill, respect for others, manners, and learning through play.
We offer 2 programs. Our 3 year old class is held on Tuesdays and Thursdays for children who have reached the age of 3 on or before September 1st. Our 4 year old class is held Mondays, Wednesdays, and Fridays and is designed for children who have reached the age of 4 on or before September 1st. Both classes are in session from 9:00-11:30 a.m., offer a social and academic curriculum and are held in the Grandwood Park Park District Community Center.
Both classes enjoy visits from the Mad Scientist, the Warren-Newport Library Bookmobile, and music teacher Bill LeClair.
The Parental Advisory Committee
The Parental Advisory Committee (PAC) is made up of volunteer parents (up to 4 members). PAC members assist in the classroom and with fundraisers. They manage the Scholastic Book Club program, coordinate the 4 year old graduation festivities, and attend Open Houses to answer any questions incoming parents may have about our program.
